Company Overview
The Wiremold Company, founded in 1900 and headquartered in West Hartford, Conn., offers the industry’s most complete line of wire and cable management solutions. These include perimeter raceway, infloor, overhead, open space, and furniture systems. The Wiremold Company also manufactures power and data quality products and – with its sister company, Ortronics – offers a full line of integrated data/communications connectivity.
The Wiremold Company is a subsidiary of Legrand SA of Limoges, France. With operations in 51 countries and 28,000 employees worldwide, Legrand is the world’s leading producer of wiring devices, cable management, and other electrical distribution products.
Under the leadership of former CEO Art Byrne, The Wiremold Company embarked upon an aggressive program of quality improvement and product introduction using the “Kaizen” philosophy. As a result, The Wiremold Company is now considered a model of manufacturing excellence – nationally and internationally.
In their book, Lean Thinking, James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones write: “The company has more than doubled its sales with the same workforce, increased wages, upgraded its physical plant, entered into a permanent growth trajectory, and become outstandingly profitable.”
According to Womack and Jones, The Wiremold Company has eliminated waste and added value to its products by replacing traditional mass production with “lean manufacturing” that allows the manufacturing process to flow smoothly in response to customer requirements.
Art Byrne retired in August 2002, and today is succeeded by Mike Gambino, also CEO of sister company Pass and Seymour Legrand. Gambino has more than 25 years of electrical industry experience and is a recognized leader for his customer focus and service orientation.
Product History
It began with raceways – thin metal channels designed to secure and protect electric wiring. The Wiremold Company first offered its model 500 raceway in 1916, and it’s still on the market. Over the years, though, engineers and contractors came to view raceways as a last resort – useful only when there was no other way to run wire.
Today it’s a vastly different story, and The Wiremold Company is a vastly different company.
Rapidly evolving technology and the need for flexible space have increased the amount and complexity of electrical wiring and communications cabling in typical buildings. At the same time, building owners are demanding improved aesthetics and lower life cycle costs. The Wiremold Company saw these changes coming and introduced the concept of wire and cable management.
The Kaizen philosophy allows The Wiremold Company to develop new products faster than ever before. The Quality Function Development system brings the “voice of the customer” to the heart of the process. The result is solutions that meet today’s challenges – and those that the future will surely bring.
Today, The Wiremold Company offers the most extensive range of pathway solutions for a variety of commercial, institutional and residential applications. |
